Motion Paths

Another useful feature for Phun could be 'motion paths' where an object would follow a user defined path.
A checkbox could be added to objects, which when checked would allow the user to draw a path for the object to follow and set the object speed/acceleration.
When the object is following a motion path it would not be affected by physics (except maybe rotationally as if there is a hinge in the center of the object) , but would still collide with other objects and push them out of the way.

The object would infinitely follow the path if it is connected at both ends, or would resume back to normal physics after reaching the end of a non-looping path, perhaps still keeping it's momentum/inertia.

I hope this is a good idea big_smile

Re: Motion Paths

very usefull! we could make grate phunny videos of that! but it should be made more usefull. It should be able to follow the path again.

path:

-----------------------   PHYSIC PART    -------------------------- motion again

should also be suggestions best!

Re: Motion Paths

Nice one. but  what about if you create a box, fixate it into a larger box, and make the small box to try to touch a spot in the large box? would we get a thruster as a result if perfectly aligned??

Re: Motion Paths

Ooh, good thinking.
That would probably work if you could orientate (or fixate) a motion path to an object.
So, yeah tongue

Re: Motion Paths

I'd like to add to this suggestion. if the line doesn't loop, have an option for the object to go backwards along the line until it gets to the start of the line (and continue back and forth between endpoints)

I'll try to be nicer if you try to be smarter.

Re: Motion Paths

LOVE IT was gonna suggest this myself

Also make this thymmable so that added objects could conect to a path and maybe there could be forks in the paths so you can like choose which way to go.

Re: Motion Paths

youd need a power slider too (so you could use it in elevators or sometihng that will move if you push a heavy block off its top)

Re: Motion Paths

Ever heard of an invible "track" and you make a invisble car or hook thing to go along it, easily possible, but this would be good.

actually, the sliders in GMOD only go in one direction, whereas motion paths can do any direction you want them to, don't collide with anything, so you can have turns as sharp as you want, and they automatically move the object smile. you would know this if you used Game Maker wink.

Re: Motion Paths

I do not like this idea.  I suppose with the advanced scripting options, we're getting further away from bare physics anyway, but I would still rather keep something as blatantly impossible as motion paths out.

Noob-friendly, unless you're being an idiot or a jerk.
You have a question?  I probably have an answer.  PM me!
You need some cool scripting for your scene?  I can help with that too.

Re: Motion Paths

I agree with Frank, It is far from the spirit of Phun. Phun is Physic and mechanics that works like real life: object interact between them in respect with Physics laws.  And in Phun, the " goal " is to create mechanical device by using those interaction.

Re: Motion Paths

Meh. I don't like this idea. It defeats the purpose of Phun being physics-based. And you could do the same thing with a rail neutral
