The future of Phun

I have some rather interesting news about the future of Phun that I'd like to share with you all!

I have started working for a small UmeŚ company called Algoryx, which is the developer of a 3D physics engine (called AGX) for professional use. Algoryx's CEO is Kenneth Bodin, my master thesis supervisor. My job description: coding Phun! Could one ask for a better job?

We are aiming to commercialize Phun, but exactly how isn't decided yet. But that doesn't mean we are going to start charging you to use Phun. On the contrary, Phun will still be free, and receive regular updates! Not only that, it will be developed even more intensely than before. So what you can expect is more free betas for you to enjoy. What you won't get, however, is the source code; at least not any time soon.

We have a lot of ideas of where to take Phun next, but only time will tell exactly what Phun is going to turn into. All in all, I think the future of Phun is very bright!

I semi-agree, it could be good for Phun. I know Emil and Ken worked on Phun together beforehand.

Now that Phun isn't exactly in Emil's full control that might mean we are less 'involved'.

On the other hand, Phun will now be more developed.

However, there are some other things I am not too sure about.

Emil I would like to speak to you on MSN and Link I will speak to you too. As you are almost always on anyway. tongue

Re: The future of Phun

What would Phun be without an active community?

We most certainly want to work close to the community also in the future.
In fact, with better resources, we hope we can work even closer to the community!

Emil will definately be highly influential on Phun's future development. I think
this is absolutely essential for Phun's continued success!
Now that he has finished his MSc, he also needs something to pay for milk and
rent (and cookies?), and maybe even for a new guitar!

Long live the community!

/Ken

Re: The future of Phun

Hmmm... This sounds like a good idea, but I also might wonder what the chance of two versions of Phun are? One free one, and one payed one with better features...

Gah! This is very depressing news for me. While I am happy that you'll profit from this, Emil, I am sad that no source code will be released. I had high hopes for that. Still, good luck, and have a Phun time! smile

Re: The future of Phun

I still think we would be involved though, indirectly. I have seen a couple of Physics games that have a thriving community being involved to what the game will become.

Also, I hope its gonna be free *crosses fingers* big_smile

I'm sorry Zuriki, I meant my post to question if that would happen, not as a suggestion. I'm all for keeping Phun Phree.

Re: The future of Phun

That's great news for me!
I was thinking to myself that when Phun's source code was released, it would be a huge chaos of new phun mods all over the place, something completely unorganized.
I think it's gonna be much better this way, with lots of updates, and STILL FREE, because this kind of game usually makes more money with sponsors than with sales.

Keep it up Emil!

You're just kinda enchourageing them to make it cost money.  And about how big is the Phun community? I used to think like 30-40 people, but i have no idea.

I used to think I was indecisive... but now im not sure

It's about 40-50 on this forum. Unknown world wide figure.

Considering it is popular in Japan.

Re: The future of Phun

Hm, depends on what makes the community. If you search users ordered by number of posts (descending) you find 3 pages with in my opinion community members. 50 people per page, that's already 150 users.
and most players don't post on forums.

Re: The future of Phun

I am happy and sort of sad  ...

This could be good and bad.

  GOOD:

More updates, and betas and features and whatnot...

BAD:
(possibly)

Charging!!!  Taking away from the spirit of PHUN ( simple etc.) , and less community involvement...

I don't know but this shall be interesting........

Re: The future of Phun

I agree...There will be more updates, but this would slowly peel phun away from the community forum, and would make everything complicated with licensing and everything like that.  As of right now, it's a little but awesome freeware program that anyone can come and download, plus join the forum.  If this were to go through, it would become a whole little business suite with licenses, copywrites, and all the commercial crap like that which is needed to make a neat little private program like this into a globally recognized program, where the recognician of things like this forum will be all but wiped out by other forums and stuff like that.  Commercializing this would just make things more complicated...and for what?  Just stick with the sponsors...for now...
As of right now, I don't see anything wrong with phun, and couldn't we keep it that way? Just my opinion...

Re: The future of Phun

That's true, so we have a high possibility of not being overshadowed by other "unofficial" Phun forums, and more people would join here then on other forums because this is the official forum, why join unofficial ones when you can join the real one?
